Questions with Would for the ESL Classroom

Would questions are questions that can be used in a variety of ways, these are some of their uses:

1. To say what might happen if something else happens.
2. As the past form of ‘will’
3. To talk about a situation that you can imagine happening

Would is often found at the beginning of sentences. For example:

• Would you like to go with me?
• Would you like to play soccer with us?
• What would do if you had a million dollars?

Structure to Make Questions with Would

Here’s a basic sentence structure for forming questions using the modal verb “would”:

“Would” + subject + base form of the verb + (complements or additional information) + question mark

Here are a few examples to illustrate this structure:

   • Would he paint the entire room blue?
