10 Ways to Improve your English Vocabulary

Sometimes it is hard to remember how not knowing many words in English feels like but one thing that I  do remember is that the more words that I knew, the more I could understand spoken English.

That thought make me do a lot of things to learn new words.

These are some of the best recommendations to Improve your English Vocabulary :

#1 Keep a Vocabulary Notebook

It is impossible to remember all new words that you read or hear, so try to record all the new vocabulary. If you are old school like me, you could write  new words in a notebook but if you live in 2018, you might find these 5 applications useful for keeping a word journal.

#2 Which Words Should I learn?

If you start watching films, listening to music or reading books, you will find lots of new words and you might try to figure out which ones might be useful and which might not. If you want an easy way out to such problem, check the New General Service List, a document in which words are ranked by frequency. I wish somebody had told me that when I was a beginner.

#3 Have fun While You Seek

I still don’t know how people find studying English boring, If you really like English, you just have to start listening  to or reading about your topic of interest. I bet it is not that difficult to stay motivated if you follow this recommendation.

#4  successful Repetition

The best way to remember new words is by continuing  reading and listening whatever you are reading and listening to now. You need to see a word plenty of times so that words moves from short-term memory to your long-term memory. If you come across a word several times in written or spoken English, you will learn that such word  is useful.

#5 Set Goals

You need to become an active learner, write the number of words you want to work in a day. If you learned five words a day, how many words would you learn by the end of the week, month and year? Do the math, that’s a lot of words.

#6 Visual Association

I bet that you have heard that phase that says that “a picture is worth a thousand words”.  Pictures can help greatly, Try to keep some pictures in your phone that help you remember new words. If you have a picture about a park, you might remember words like tree, lake, birds, picnic among many others.
